What an amazing few days we have had in Rushbrooke for this year's Junior Interprovincials.
Starting off on Tuesday with the Under 18 event we had Leinster blazing a trail to the title but we were entertained with great tennis over the three sessions.
On Wednesday we started the Under 14 event and Munster finished deserving winners at the end of play today. The final day on Thursday saw some of the best action seen for many a year with some spectacular matches both in the morning and afternoon sessions.
Congratulations to all the players who showed remarkable sportmanship throughout the three days and it was fantastic to see all the players from the provinces mixing and getting on so well with each other. Thank you to the captains, mentors and all the supporters who attended the event.
To the different sponsors on our side we would like to thank Harbour Browns Steak house in Cobh for the fantastic gear for both our junior teams and also our Senior team. Thank you to FDC Group who sponsor our senior performance squad which provided many of the players to the winning team, thank you to C&C Group for the bottled water for the players for the event and also to some of the local businesses who provided minerals and fruit.
Thank you to Colm and Emma Mc Donagh for the great coverage on our social outlets and especially for the many great pictures that captured the action throughout the event.
This year we decided to see if we could try and raise the profile of the event a little bit with a few new ideas. We produced many photographs and tried to cover each and every player that they might have something to look back on, we streamed live some of the action and also streamed the two presentations live.
Finally, we decided to present each player with a medal as recognition of their participation and it was great to hear the captains call out their players and to be presented by Tennis Ireland President Mr Clifford Carroll. Hopefully this might be something other provinces might continue as it's the players that make the event that it is and it's a nice gesture which all the captains and players were really delighted with.
Finally a word about Rushbrooke, a really spectacular setting for such an event. Thank you for use of your magnificent facility. Well done to Eddie Ronayne and the rest of the team Robyn, Maggie, Paul & Martin who showed how it should be done. Well done to the bar staff of Rushbrooke who tirelessly looked after all the players with food and drink over three tough days.
Thank you all for making this a great event in 2017.
With the Country's finest young tennis talent heading to Rushbrooke Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club in Cobh for the Junior Interprovincial Championships next week, we're delighted to welcome Cork's Red FM on board to give the talented youngsters of Munster some invaluable exposure as they take on their rivals from Leinster, Ulster and Connacht over three days in East Cork.
Munster Tennis' Head of Performance Tennis, Cian Blake, has been in the studio with Cork's Red FM's Ruairi O'Hagan over the weekend to give the low down on the under 14s and under 18s squads, and Red FM will be updating throughout the week with news and the scores as they happen in Rushbrooke.
You can tune in to Cork's Red FM's award Big Red Bench dedicated sports show on Sunday from 6pm to hear what Cian had to say about the Munster youngsters as they look to win silverware in Cobh and proudly fly the flag for their Province.
You can listen in online from across the province and country (or even further afield!) at www.redfm.ie or tune in across Cork city and county at:
Over the past weekend we had junior players competing in three different tournaments.
In St.Annes Waterford we had the Category 1 event for the under 14s and 18s. It proved to be a fantastic weekend for Munster players with no fewer than 7 of the 8 final places going to Munster players. Well done to Hugh O Sullivan and Ava Fanning who won the under 14 boys and girls singles events respectively.
Well done also to Olwyn Ryan Bovey and Cian Maguire who won the under 18 singles events. Congrats to Roisin Moore, Katie Morrissey and Eoin Hartnett who were runners up in their events.
In Rathgar, we had two finalists in Erin Perrem and Aiden Foley, both were very unlucky to just fall short in their matches. Well done also to our under 10 players, Darragh Foley, Tomas Scully, Charlie Twomey and Oisin Rea who had fantastic results in the under 10 event.
In Westport, James O Callaghan Maher was our only representative. Well done to James for going all the way and winning the boys under 12 event.
Fantastic day in Waterford at St.Annes category 1 tournament.
Huge congratulationss to Munster Senior Squad members, Hugh O Sullivan (under 14), Ava Fanning (under 14) and Olwyn Ryan Bovey (under 18) who all won their singles events.
