2017/2018 saw the implementation of a 16-month transition Calendar which comes to an end on the
31st of December 2018.

Transition points were in place at the end of 2017 to allow this 16-month Calendar to be successful, there will be no transition points this year.

The 2019 Calendar season will run from January 1st – December 31st.

This change will come into effect for all affiliates and competitions operating under the jurisdiction of Tennis Ireland.

What is the purpose of this?

This change will align the Tennis Ireland Calendar with international norms including both the International Tennis Federation and Tennis Europe’s Calendar. The change will also align the Tennis Ireland calendar with the calendar year thereby simplifying the age eligibility rule.

What effect will this change have?

The main change resulting from this new policy is that all players will be able to play in their respective age group through to the end of December each year as opposed to moving to a new age group from September 1st. Players will still have the option to play up an age group if they so wish.

For Example; Brian plays tennis in Munster and is 11 years old. He will not turn 12 until 2nd December. In the current calendar, Brian will play his last 4 months of competitive tennis as an 11-year-old in the u14 age group. Under the new rule Brian will be able to play u12 until the 31st December.

Will this change have an effect on ranking points?

Ranking points have a life span of one year regardless of when they begin so there will be no impact on
the current ranking points rule.

A superb facility that will be utilised by the Satellite, Performance and Interprovincial squads of Munster Tennis for training and practice, the fabulously located courts and associated facilities are available to use on a social basis too by way of subscription packages.

An obstacle all clubs run into!
One problem most clubs have is recruiting volunteers. Usually volunteers are recruited within the club's membership circles. While this proves successful most of the time, there is another way to get people to fill specific roles.

Let's Get Started

Volunteer Ireland is The National Volunteer Development Agency and a support body for Volunteer Centres and Volunteering Information Services in Ireland. I have myself participated in some volunteering groups when I first came to Cork and the process of getting recruited is quite straight forward. I even had to be interviewed for one of the positions which was a specific role within a wildlife organisation.

This is what they do in their own words:

Volunteers and Volunteering – We promote and celebrate volunteering in Ireland through campaigns such as National Volunteering Week and the Volunteer Ireland Awards. Along with Volunteer Centres across the country we manage I-VOL (the national database of Irish volunteering opportunities and listings).
Charities and Not for Profit Organisations – We support national volunteer involving organisations by offering bespoke training, consultancy and an extensive range of online guides and resources on engaging volunteers.
Corporate Companies – We also support companies interested in volunteering and offer volunteer management services for large-scale events and festivals.
Volunteer Centres and Volunteering Information Services – There are 21 Volunteer Centre and 8 Volunteering Information Services across the country who work with Volunteer Ireland. Volunteer Ireland develops and supports best practice in volunteering and Volunteer Centres, including the evaluation of Volunteer Centres according to a quality standard framework.

Ideas of how to use their servicesYou can display listings of any specific positions that are vacant within your club, such as a treasurer, admin, marketing and PR etc. You may also consider giving something back in exchange for the volunteering role to make it more attrative such as a free yearly membership or a free coaching lesson.

Another idea is to use the website to recruit volunteers for a one off event such as an open day.

Please note if you are using volunteers for an event that involves children in any way, they would have to be Garda Vetted.

WHAT IT IS ABOUT
Munster Tennis are keen to develop tennis in North Tipperary. This day is aimed at boys and girls in North Tipperary and surrounding clubs of close proximity who wish to develop their tennis with players of similar ability.

This is a one day event where players of a standard identified by the coaches will be invited to attend Munster Tennis squad training each Saturday for six weeks at Nenagh Lawn Tennis Club starting from 17th February 2018.

AGE GROUPS
The focus will be on players born in the years 2007 to 2011. So, if your child is currently playing with a red, orange or green tennis ball, they are most welcome to attend.

With the new year comes a raft of resolutions. Every January all magazines, blogs and social media boast of health and fitness tips appealing to anyone who may be looking to tone up, try out a new sport, or lose those holiday pounds post-New Year’s Eve.

Tennis clubs should use the opportunity the-new-year-new-you trend presents and make the most of it to create more activity in the club as well as get more members in.

cardio tennis

This time of the year is an ideal time to host a short cardio tennis course to help your membes keep fit Cardio Tennis is a fun group activity for anyone, at any playing level, looking for a fun way to burn calories & interact with others outside of the gym.

Cardio Tennis is a high energy fitness that combines the best features of the sport of tennis with cardiovascular exercise, delivering the ultimate, full body, calorie burning aerobic workout.
Most women can burn 300 to 500 calories per hour and men burn between 500 to 1,000. Not only are you getting a great workout, but you are also learning a skill and training for tennis.

Invite a Fitness Instructor

Tennis legend John McEnroe once said that you can’t get fit simply by playing tennis matches. While you might not train with the dedication or intensity of these elite athletes, the principles are the same – doing work off the court will help you on it.

It is a great idea to use your clubs facilities to their maximum potential and invite a fitness instructor that will create a workout such as a HIIT session or a circuit that will both burn calories and raise their heart-rate and strengthen their muscles improving their game.

Run Run Run

Any exercise is good exercise, but when it comes to losing weight, it’s hard to beat running. After all, running is one of the most efficient ways to burn calories.

Organise a weekly running group starting from your club. You can limit it to members but might be beneficial to open it to anyone and show how great your club is to outsiders.

Here are some tips of how to bring some of the Christmas magic in your club.

turkey tournament

Set the Christmas mood with a Turkey Tournament. Collaborate with a Butcher near you to create a Christmas Dinner hamper for the winner of the Tournament.

TIP: If you have big numbers you can just play tiebreaks or a set starting at 2 all. This event is all about having fun.

PROJECT SECRET SANTA

If you have a group of players that regularly gets together such as Begginer's Night, Club Night, Adult Coahing, why not organise a Secret Santa for them.

Parent and Child Doubles

Guided by the Christmas spirit that has emphasis on family your club can host a Parent and Child Fun Doubles event.
